for their groundbreaking research and development work that has resulted in the realization of a high-speed X-ray-based computed tomography (CT) instrument and method for non-destructively scanning whole tree logs (roundwood). Their innovative work has made online optimization of log usage in the sawmilling process possible and effective. This new technology enables the identification of undesirable board features inside the logs, such as knots, pitch pockets, cracks, and rot, before they are sawn. This data is then used to control and optimize the board output by cutting the logs in a way that increases the value of the sawn products by approximately 10 percent.
